Unit 5: Once Upon a Time in The West

Once upon a Time in the West

At the beginning of the first scene, there is a constant creak of the windmill turning, which continues through to the end. It’s a high pitched noise, which gives an eerie affect to the scene. Because it continues till the end of the scene, you could suggest that it shows that nothing has changed despite the four deaths, or that the deaths are insignificant in the big picture, or non-impacting.

The loud footsteps aid to the aesthetic of the western landscape, those creaking footsteps due to the wooden structures.

The water sound effects make the small, seemingly insignificant activities more engaging. Like the simple dripping on the mans hat becomes a defining moment to the character, because he ends up drinking what he collects. The sounds define each hitman character, unlike the man struggling with the fly, he is very calm and collected, he isn’t irritated by the water dripping on his head. This could represent his character trait in the sense that he is very calm and collected in the face of what is to come. It’s the specific sounds that define each character. Each of the three are unique from each other – this is achieved through the sound effects used to associate with each of them. One of the men is easily irritated it seems. First with the telegram machine, which he unplugs due to the noise that it is making. Then next is his battle with the fly buzzing around him with, again , the very distinctive sound which is the buzzing.

DIEGETIC:

Birds

Dog

Fly

Horse screech

Wind

Water

The harmonica is played by the character that gets off the train. The harmonica is signature to wild western films. This is a simple tune that is played, again very high pitched. It is repeated for a while, which builds anticipation and tension. The harmonica is also played to introduce the character, which means you associate the introduction of the character with the music being played.

SCRIPT

INT – CARAVAN – DAY

LEE is opening some tinned food for his younger brother, TOM. TOM is drawing, he looks distant.

LEE

Are you alright, mate?

TOM

Yeah.

His brother looks at the food put in front of him.

TOM

Aren’t you having any?

LEE

Nah it’s alright, not hungry.

TOM

I don’t like it.

LEE

Well you’re going to have to like it aren’t you.

TOM

Sorry Lee.

LEE

No, I’m sorry bro, you shouldn’t have to live off spam.

LEE exits the caravan to find his friend Hendrix.

EXT – CAMP – DAY

HENDRIX is crouched in a circle of youths, trying to sell moonshine.

HENDRIX

Look, how else are you expecting to get smashed tomorrow?

No answer.

HENDRIX

Exactly! So I think it would be wise to buy from me now whilst you still can.

GIRL

How much for one bottle?

HENDRIX

One bottle of the finest will cost you –

LEE approaches the group.

LEE

Oi Hendrix ya wanker.

HENDRIX

Don’t speak like that around my customers

LEE

Customer is it? Oh no what you peddlin’ today

GIRL

I’m buying his vodka stuff

LEE

Oh it is far from vodi my love, tastes like bloody piss.

HENDRIX

Still put you on your arse though.

LEE

Can I have a word, boy?

HENDRIX

Course, hold that thought guys.

LEE and HENDRIX walk a few metres away out of earshot.

HENDRIX

Are you alright?

LEE

Yeah I’m fine but I am fucking starving. And so is my brother. But him more than me, he’s pretty thin, man.

HENDRIX

Aren’t we all.

LEE

I’m serious.

HENDRIX

So am I, everyone’s got fuck all to trade with me.

LEE

HENDRIX there are more important things in life than moonshine and ciggy’s.

HENDRIX

Not to me.

EXT – TREVAYLOR WOODS – DAY

HENDRIX AND LEE ARE STROLLING THROUGH THE FOREST.

HENDRIX

I’ll tell you what I miss mate, Game of Thrones.   Game of fucking Thrones. Never finished it and never will. That’s one fact I’ll never get over.

LEE

No iPhone innit, can’t watch porn anymore. That’s what I aint getting over.

HENDRIX

Tragic.

HENDRIX lights up a straight.

LEE

Pinch a cig?

HENDRIX

What you got to offer?

LEE

Don’t be a dick.

HENDRIX hands him a straight.

LEE

Cheers for coming with me on this one though. I’ll make it worth your while somehow.

HENDRIX

Nah don’t worry about that.

LEE

No honestly I will.

HENDRIX

No, I mean don’t worry about making it worth my while, it already is.

LEE

How’s that?

HENDRIX

I know a fella who’ll trade anything. Once we’ve bagged as much shit as you need then I’m taking a small detour to his place, that alright?

LEE spots a man urinating against a bush, his bag a few metres away.

LEE

Oi check out bossman over there.

They take cover behind a tree.

HENDRIX

I remember him. Prick.

LEE

I say we jump him.

HENDRIX

Fuck that, I guarantee you he’s got a blade.

LEE

And you’ve got a cricket bat, what the fuck does it matter! Listen, I’ll just grab it and we go. Simple as that.

HENDRIX

One guy with one bag, I don’t reckon he’s got a great deal to offer mate. Let’s just go about our business.

LEE

Can’t hurt to try though.

HENDRIX

If you think it’s worth it.

CHOICE: STEAL or DON’T STEAL

STEAL: LEE runs to the bag and grabs it, but is spotted in the process.

MAN

Oi, get away from my shit!

LEE

Fuck you!

LEE is tackled to the ground.

HENDRIX

Fuckin hell.

LEE and the man are scuffling on the ground. HENDRIX selfishly finishes his straight before running over and hitting him over the head with the bat. They take the bag and go.

DON’T STEAL: LEE and Hendrix walk past him.

MAN

Who the fuck are you?

LEE

We’re not looking for any trouble mate.

MAN

I’m not your mate.

HENDRIX

Calm it hunny.

MAN

You taking the piss? I will fuck you up.

He takes out a knife.

HENDRIX

And he’s got a knife. What did I say.

They leave.

EXT – TREVAYLOR – DAY

LEE and HENDRIX emerge from the woods and are about to head into town. HENDRIX takes a sip from his hip flask.

LEE

Really?

HENDRIX

Damn right, bit of liquid courage will do us some good my boy.

LEE

Yeah why not.

They head in the direction of town.

EXT – TOWN – DAY

LEE and HENDRIX are taking cover in an alley.

HENDRIX

I say we go up hospital.

LEE

Can’t imagine much food being there. I reckon we go down town.

HEDNRIX

Either way we’re gonna have lean pickings.

LEE

Have some optimism.

HENDRIX

Gone are they days for fuckin optimism.

CHOICE: DOWN TOWN or HOSPITAL

HOSPITAL: They break into the hospital through a window.

HENDRIX

This is sketchy.

They search round. LEE comes across a supply of insulin.

LEE

This is insulin; bare people are diabetic at camp.

HENDRIX

Mate I’m hoping for some morphine.

LEE

Okay?

HENDRIX finds a bottle of surgical spirits.

HENDRIX

Oi Lee!

LEE

What is it?

HENDRIX

Spirits!

LEE

You got my hopes up then. Fuckin hell Hendrix you’re an alcoholic.

HENDRIX

What?

A door opens with a loud bang. A man living in the hospital goes to HENDRIX and LEE who are intruding on his home.

MAN

Oi!

He punches HENDRIX then grabs him by the neck and starts strangling him.

CHOICE:

KNIFE: LEE pulls out the knife and stabs the man. They both get out quickly.

NO KNIFE: LEE knees the man in the head and he comes off HENDRIX. They both lay into him on the ground then realise the extent of their violence and leave quickly.

DOWN TOWN ABANDONED BUILDING:

They find a sleeping bag and supplies.

HENDRIX

Someone lives here.

LEE

So?

LEE does not hesitate to grab as much food as he can.

HENDRIX

Oi Lee someone’s coming.

The owner of the stash attacks LEE.

If LEE took the knife then he stabs him and proceeds to bag the supplies.

If LEE didn’t take the knife then he is hurt badly until HENDRIX steps in and hits him over the head with his cricket bat.

EXT – FIELD – EVENING

HENDRIX

I am pumping G.

LEE

I know man, that was nuts.

The man they encountered in the woods ealier appears across the field. He is in a very large gang.

MAN (ALFIE)

There they are boys!

HENDRIX

Let’s get the fuck out of here Lee.

LEE

We could take a few of them!

HENDRIX

You’re mad, let’s go you prick.

The gang are approaching them.

LEE

Come on then!

LEE’S bravado excites HENDRIX, who joins in.

HENDRIX

Yeah you! Come get it you cunts!

LEE and HENDRIX both start goading the gang with taunts and gestures.

MAN

Let’s get em’ lads!

The gang start running across to HENDRIX and Lee, who both bolt it into the cover of trees.

INT – DEALERSHIP – NIGHT

DEALER

DEALER

What can I do for ya?

HENDRIX

You got ciggy’s? Tobacco?

DEALER

That depends.

HENDRIX

I’ve got a fresh batch brewed just for you.

DEALER

Do ya now?

LEE

We need food as well.

DEALER

How about eight bottles of your home-brew for 10 packs of straights?

HENDRIX

That’s what I like to hear

HENDRIX and the DEALER conduct their business.

The DEALER spots insulin/food in LEE’S bag.

DEALER

I’ll take that off your hands boy.

LEE

Nah you’re alright, thanks.

DEALER

Not even for one of these bad boys?

He gets out an old iPod.

DEALER

Fully charged, with a charger if you can manage to get hold of a power source and it’s got a right mix of songs from 2016.

HENDRIX

I am having that!

LEE

No you’re not, this my stash.

HENDRIX

Go on! We could hook it up to some speakers and have a nuts one tomorrow!

LEE

HENDRIX

Unit 7: Evaluation.

With the start of unit 7, I was required to research the form of media that is interactive media; more specifically interactive film. We did this in order to inform our own film making. I felt that I now understand well the pros and cons of interactive film, its uses and its technicalities. When planning my film, the research and the brief led me to base my interactive film in a dystopian future with a lack of technology and a display of the aftermath of a revolution. The stimulus from the brief was a “digital revolution”. This meant the research of the digital revolution of the 20th and 21st century. However I steered away from this idea as I watched episodes of Black Mirror, which all discuss meanings and ideas behind the digital revolution of today. Instead my link to the idea of a digital revolution was the idea of a physical overthrow of government and the status quo, a socio-political revolution in which there is a sudden loss in technology and the digital world rather than a sudden rise in such. This is what gave me the setting for my interactive film.

Sound Design: Unit 5

Sound design is the process of specifying, acquiring, manipulating or generating audio elements. It is employed in a variety of disciplines including filmmaking, television production, theatre, sound recording and reproduction, live performance, sound art, post-production, radio and video game development.

A sound designer will work closely with a director in order to achieve the creation of sounds for a film, tv show , theatre piece or video game.

Diegetic sound is sound seen where the audience understands it’s source due to it being physically shown on screen , or an action has directly caused this sound.

Non-diegetic sound is when a sound is added for dramatic effect , or through music added to create a specific atmosphere. Narration is an example of non-diegetic sound.

Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to film, video, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality. These reproduced sounds can be anything from the swishing of clothing and footsteps to squeaky doors and breaking glass.

A Foley Artist is a person who creates (or re-creates) sounds for movies. For example, if the sound of an actor’s footsteps were not recorded well or lost when the voice was re-recorded, a Foley artist will recreate them.

Automated dialogue replacement is the process of re-recording dialogue by the original actor after the filming process to improve audio quality or reflect dialogue changes (also known as “looping” or a “looping session”).

This may be used when a film is released in a different country – which is usually referred to as dubbing.

A “clean” sound is close to a pure tone, with maybe some harmonics, like you get from a real instrument being played well. A “dirty” sound means that you can hear other tones or noise alongside the note itself. … ‘Dirty’ typically means harsh in some way.

The term buzz track usually means general ambient sound, i.e. the background sound of a scene. It is sometimes used more specifically to mean room tone. Buzz tracks are typically recorded on location before or after the main action has been recorded. Wild track, also known as wild sound and wild lines, is an audio recording intended to be synchronized with film or video but recorded separately.

Well known music that has been selected for film has a powerful effect on an audience as they carry their associations with said sound as they are watching the film.
